Choosing an EV
Compare annual running costs and total ownership costs for an EV and a petrol or diesel vehicle. Revise any earlier step to update the downstream budget. Your figures stay in this page’s memory, not in storage or the address.
Every step shares one set of inputs. Change an earlier step and every figure below recalculates. Nothing is saved, and refreshing the page clears it.

Assumptions and estimates
- Home/public shares refer to grid energy, not journey distance.
- Losses are a share of grid energy, not an uplift on battery energy.
- Simple payback uses upfront purchase/installation difference and annual running savings; resale and financing are accounted separately in ownership totals.
- A positive ownership-cost difference means the EV is more costly under these assumptions; it is not a recommendation.
- Method: Battery kWh = km × Wh/km ÷ 1,000. Grid energy = battery energy ÷ (1 − grid-energy loss fraction); split grid energy between home and public tariffs. Ownership cost = purchase less resale plus installation, financing interest/fees and running costs over the entered period.
- Resale values, consumption, tariffs and future annual costs are estimates, not guarantees. Financing principal is already represented by purchase cost, so enter interest and fees only. Depreciation is represented by purchase less resale and is not added again. Excludes opportunity cost, inflation, tax relief, grants unless reflected in purchase price, and unexpected repairs.
Useful next steps
- Check the payback period against how long you will keep the vehicle.
- Copy, print or download a record of this calculation when you need one.

How the workflow connects your figures
Battery kWh = km × Wh/km ÷ 1,000. Grid energy = battery energy ÷ (1 − grid-energy loss fraction); split grid energy between home and public tariffs. Ownership cost = purchase less resale plus installation, financing interest/fees and running costs over the entered period.
Resale values, consumption, tariffs and future annual costs are estimates, not guarantees. Financing principal is already represented by purchase cost, so enter interest and fees only. Depreciation is represented by purchase less resale and is not added again. Excludes opportunity cost, inflation, tax relief, grants unless reflected in purchase price, and unexpected repairs.
- Distance and energy: Annual distance (km), Ownership period (years), EV battery consumption (Wh/km), Charging losses as a percentage of grid energy (%), Home share of grid energy (%), Home electricity tariff (€/kWh), Public electricity tariff (€/kWh), ICE fuel consumption (L/100 km), Petrol / diesel price (€/L).
- Purchase, installation and resale: EV purchase price (€), ICE purchase price (€), One-off charging installation (€), Estimated EV resale value at end (€), Estimated ICE resale value at end (€).
- Maintenance, insurance and financing: EV annual maintenance (€), ICE annual maintenance (€), EV annual insurance and road tax (€), ICE annual insurance and road tax (€), EV financing interest and fees over ownership, excluding principal (€), ICE financing interest and fees over ownership, excluding principal (€).
