Grazing paddock area: practical guide
This guide explains how to use the Count.ie grazing paddock area. Estimate grazing allocation from herd demand and removable cover. Follow the inputs, method and worked example below, then compare your own scenario.

Open the Grazing paddock area calculatorWhat to prepare
- Record the area, stock or material measurements with their units.
- Use product specifications and an appropriate farm-specific rate rather than an unexplained default.
- Separate agronomic planning from tax-relief eligibility or contractual questions.
Understand the inputs
The calculation method
Usable grass = (entry cover − residual cover) × utilisation. Daily area = herd demand ÷ usable grass/ha.
Worked example
Illustrative inputs and their result.
Example inputs
- Animals
- 80
- Grass dry matter per animal per day (kg)
- 15
- Entry cover (kg DM/ha)
- 1600
- Residual cover on same measurement basis (kg DM/ha)
- 400
- Utilisation of removable cover (%)
- 85
- Days in paddock
- 2
- Planned rotation length (days)
- 21
Calculated example result
- Paddock Area Ha
- 2.353 ha
- Rotation Area Ha
- 24.706 ha
How to interpret the result
A farm quantity or allocation estimate does not replace agronomic advice, product directions or scheme eligibility checks. Soil, weather, crop and stocking conditions can alter the appropriate decision.
Compare equal areas or periods using explicit rates. Confirm the chosen rate and practical constraints with the relevant product, adviser or official scheme source.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not combine hectares and acres without a deliberate conversion.
- A modelled application quantity is not permission to exceed a product label or environmental limit.
- Check field variation and actual usable area before ordering or applying materials.
Assumptions and sources
Cover readings must use the same calibrated basis. Excludes growth during grazing and rotation, supplementation, soil trafficability and animal nutritional constraints.
