What to prepare

  • Record the area, stock or material measurements with their units.
  • Use product specifications and an appropriate farm-specific rate rather than an unexplained default.
  • Separate agronomic planning from tax-relief eligibility or contractual questions.

Understand the inputs

The calculation method

Fresh tonnes = volume × fresh density ÷ 1,000. Retained stock applies storage loss; dry matter applies measured DM fraction.

Worked example

Illustrative inputs and their result.

Example inputs

Clamp length (m)
30
Clamp width (m)
10
Average filled height (m)
3
Fresh silage density (kg/m³)
650
Silage dry matter (%)
30
Storage loss (%)
10

Calculated example result

Retained Fresh Tonnes
526.5 t
Available Dry Matter Tonnes
157.95 t

How to interpret the result

A farm quantity or allocation estimate does not replace agronomic advice, product directions or scheme eligibility checks. Soil, weather, crop and stocking conditions can alter the appropriate decision.

Compare equal areas or periods using explicit rates. Confirm the chosen rate and practical constraints with the relevant product, adviser or official scheme source.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not combine hectares and acres without a deliberate conversion.
  • A modelled application quantity is not permission to exceed a product label or environmental limit.
  • Check field variation and actual usable area before ordering or applying materials.

Assumptions and sources

Use average actual height, representative density and forage analysis. Density and loss vary with chop length, packing, fermentation and storage.
