Crop seeding rate: practical guide
This guide explains how to use the Count.ie crop seeding rate. Convert target plants and thousand-seed weight into seed quantities. Follow the inputs, method and worked example below, then compare your own scenario.

Open the Crop seeding rate calculatorWhat to prepare
- Record the area, stock or material measurements with their units.
- Use product specifications and an appropriate farm-specific rate rather than an unexplained default.
- Separate agronomic planning from tax-relief eligibility or contractual questions.
Understand the inputs
The calculation method
Seeds/m² = target plants ÷ (germination × establishment). kg/ha = seeds/m² × thousand-seed weight ÷ 100.
Worked example
Illustrative inputs and their result.
Example inputs
- Target established plants per m²
- 300
- Thousand-seed weight (g)
- 45
- Tested germination (%)
- 95
- Field establishment of germinated seeds (%)
- 90
- Field area (ha)
- 10
- Seed price (€/kg)
- 0.7
Calculated example result
- Seed Kg Ha
- 157.89 kg/ha
- Total Seed Kg
- 1,578.95 kg
How to interpret the result
A farm quantity or allocation estimate does not replace agronomic advice, product directions or scheme eligibility checks. Soil, weather, crop and stocking conditions can alter the appropriate decision.
Compare equal areas or periods using explicit rates. Confirm the chosen rate and practical constraints with the relevant product, adviser or official scheme source.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not combine hectares and acres without a deliberate conversion.
- A modelled application quantity is not permission to exceed a product label or environmental limit.
- Check field variation and actual usable area before ordering or applying materials.
Assumptions and sources
Target plant population and establishment must come from crop-specific guidance and field conditions. Seed treatment, varieties and sowing restrictions are excluded.
