Budget 2027: Carbon tax and fuel excise dates

Heating-fuel reductions, deferred carbon increases and the staged restoration of fuel excise.

Sources checked .

Who it affects and when

Audience: Households, motorists and businesses budgeting for fuel.

Timing: Multiple dates: 28 February, 8 April, 1 May, 30 June and 13 October 2027.

What was announced

Kerosene and natural gas
Carbon tax on kerosene and natural gas reduces to €48.50 per tonne of CO₂ until 2030. A tonne-of-CO₂ rate is not a per-litre retail price.
Carbon-tax deferrals
The auto-fuel increase scheduled for 14 October 2026 is deferred to 1 May 2027, with a further step on 13 October 2027. Marked gas oil increases are also deferred to May and October. Minor and solid-fuel schedules differ.
Non-carbon excise
Restoration of temporary petrol, diesel and marked-gas-oil reductions starts on 28 February 2027. MGO restoration is scheduled then; petrol and diesel steps continue on 8 April and 1 May, reaching full restoration on 30 June.

Practical next steps

  1. Separate carbon tax from the non-carbon Mineral Oil Tax component.
  2. Use fuel type and purchase date; do not apply one timetable to every fuel.
  3. Treat retail-price estimates as scenarios: wholesale prices, VAT and supplier pricing also matter.
