What to prepare

  • Have the figures for qualifying dependent children, combined paid employee hours per fortnight and months employment is expected to continue ready, from a dated document, with the period (annual, monthly or per transaction) that each input expects.
  • Note the date of the transaction, since this model has no year selector and fixed rates may have changed.
  • Compare your circumstances with the cited DSP Working Family Payment operational guidelines and 2026 worked example before relying on the headline result.

Understand the inputs

Qualifying dependent children
Under 18, or aged 18–22 in full-time day education; living with you or supported by you.
Other assessable weekly family income (€)
Net business/farm profit, rent, spousal maintenance and assessable benefits; exclude Child Benefit, child maintenance and prescribed disregards.

The calculation method

Average weekly family income is employee pay less prescribed payroll deductions plus other assessable income. Payment is 60% of the 2026 threshold shortfall, minimum €20 when eligible, rounded to a whole euro.

How to interpret the result

Estimate, not a DSP decision. Distinguish a tax saving, a tax bill, cash received and money remaining: they are not interchangeable. An estimate does not establish eligibility, filing compliance or when a refund will be paid.

Change one input of working family payment estimate at a time and record the result; keep a record of the year, date and assumptions so a change in the result can be explained.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not mix tax years or apply a newly announced measure to an earlier transaction.
  • Avoid counting an allowance, credit, contribution or loss twice.
  • Check exclusions and personal circumstances before relying on the headline result.

Assumptions and sources

Estimate, not a DSP decision. At least 38 employee hours per fortnight, employment expected to last 3 months and a qualifying dependent child are required. Self-employed hours do not count. Annualised payment assumes an unchanged 52-week award.

Rules checked . Baseline rules year: 2026. Reviewed scope: 2026 limits and ordinary employee-income assessment. This does not verify every selectable year, date or Budget announcement profile.
