Open the Retirement lump-sum Income Tax calculatorWhat to prepare
- Have the figures for proposed retirement lump sum (€) and previous retirement lump sums since 7 december 2005 (€) ready, from a dated document, with the period (annual, monthly or per transaction) that each input expects.
- Note the date of the transaction, since this model has no year selector and fixed rates may have changed.
- Compare your circumstances with the cited Revenue retirement lump-sum taxation before relying on the headline result.
Understand the inputs
The calculation method
Lifetime cumulative first €200,000 is tax-free; the next €300,000 is taxed at 20%; the remainder at 40%. Allocate only the proposed payment to the remaining bands.
Worked example
Illustrative inputs and their result.
Example inputs
- Proposed retirement lump sum (€)
- 300000
- Previous retirement lump sums since 7 December 2005 (€)
- 100000
Calculated example result
- Income Tax
- €40,000.00
- After Income Tax
- €260,000.00
How to interpret the result
Income Tax only: after-Income-Tax amount is not final net cash. Distinguish a tax saving, a tax bill, cash received and money remaining: they are not interchangeable. An estimate does not establish eligibility, filing compliance or when a refund will be paid.
Change one input of retirement lump-sum income tax at a time and record the result; keep a record of the year, date and assumptions so a change in the result can be explained.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not mix tax years or apply a newly announced measure to an earlier transaction.
- Avoid counting an allowance, credit, contribution or loss twice.
- Check exclusions and personal circumstances before relying on the headline result.
Assumptions and sources
Income Tax only: after-Income-Tax amount is not final net cash. The slice above €500,000 can also attract USC through PAYE, which is excluded. Scheme withdrawal limits and special foreign-pension treatment are not assessed.
Rules checked . Baseline rules year: 2026. Reviewed scope: Lifetime Income Tax bands; excludes USC. This does not verify every selectable year, date or Budget announcement profile.
