Budget 2027: Childcare fees and National Childcare Scheme

The €550 monthly headline cap, €2.50 subsidy and September income-threshold changes.

Sources checked .

Who it affects and when

Audience: Parents using participating childcare services and families with additional needs.

Timing: The published income-assessed threshold changes and AIM extension start in September 2027; check the fee measure's rollout with the provider.

What was announced

Universal subsidy and fees
The announced universal subsidy for children up to and including senior infants rises from €2.14 to €2.50 per hour. The published fee example gives a €137.50 weekly parental charge, described as €550 for four weeks, down from the €735 monthly headline.
Income-assessed support
From September 2027 the maximum-subsidy income threshold increases from €34,000 to €38,500. The multiple-child discount rises from €5,500 to €6,000 for two under-15 children, and from €11,000 to €12,500 for three or more.
Access and inclusion
Access and Inclusion Model support expands to children under three from September 2027. Additional family and child-care service funding is not a substitute for an individual eligibility assessment.

Practical next steps

  1. Check your child's age, subsidised hours and the provider's participation and fees.
  2. Use reckonable income, not simply a gross salary figure.
  3. Distinguish a four-week headline from the actual number of billed weeks in a calendar year.

Examples

Published 45-hour example
At €2.50 × 45 hours, the subsidy is €112.50 weekly. Against the source's €250 weekly fee, the parental charge is €137.50. Four such weeks cost €550; this is not a universal charge for every attendance pattern.
