Waste diversion and cost Calculator

Measure material recovery and compare entered disposal prices. This free waste diversion and cost calculator shows the calculation and its assumptions so you can compare your own figures.

How the waste diversion and cost calculation works

Diversion = recovered mass ÷ total mass. Treatment cost combines residual and recovery masses at their entered prices.

Reuse, recycling and composting are combined as diversion only. Prices should include relevant charges; contamination, collection costs and actual final destinations are excluded.

Using this calculator

  1. Enter your own figures in the labelled inputs. Keep the currencies, units and time periods consistent.
  2. Choose any applicable rate profile, pattern or assumption shown for this tool. Open additional inputs when relevant.
  3. Review diversion percent and estimated saving, then read the stated assumptions and eligibility conditions before using the result.
