Guide written .
Open the Emergency payroll tax calculatorWhat to prepare
- Have the figures for gross pay for this period (€), emergency pay-period number and pay month (1–12) ready, from a dated document, with the period (annual, monthly or per transaction) that each input expects.
- Note the date of the transaction, since this model has no year selector and fixed rates may have changed.
- Compare your circumstances with the cited Revenue emergency tax before relying on the headline result.
Understand the inputs
- Pay frequency
Options: Weekly; Fortnightly; Every four weeks; Monthly.
The calculation method
Emergency PAYE treatment follows PPSN availability and emergency period; emergency USC is 8%, with employee PRSI assessed separately.
Worked example
Illustrative inputs and their result.
Example inputs
- Gross pay for this period (€)
- 1000
- Pay frequency
- Weekly
- Emergency pay-period number
- 1
- Employer has your PPSN
- Yes
- Pay month (1–12)

Calculated example result
- Net Pay
- €645.73
- Income Tax
- €230.77
How to interpret the result
A valid Revenue Payroll Notification supersedes this emergency estimate. Distinguish a tax saving, a tax bill, cash received and money remaining: they are not interchangeable. An estimate does not establish eligibility, filing compliance or when a refund will be paid.
Change one input of emergency payroll tax at a time and record the result; keep a record of the year, date and assumptions so a change in the result can be explained.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not mix tax years or apply a newly announced measure to an earlier transaction.
- Avoid counting an allowance, credit, contribution or loss twice.
- Check exclusions and personal circumstances before relying on the headline result.
Assumptions and sources
A valid Revenue Payroll Notification supersedes this emergency estimate. Missing PPSN is not the same as an RPN with zero credits.
