What to prepare

  • Have the figures for current benefit (€) and previous taxable benefits in this group (€) ready, from a dated document, with the period (annual, monthly or per transaction) that each input expects.
  • Note the date of the transaction, since this model has no year selector and fixed rates may have changed.
  • Compare your circumstances with the cited Revenue CAT thresholds before relying on the headline result.

Understand the inputs

Relationship group

Options: Group A; Group B; Group C.

Benefit type

Options: Inheritance; Gift.

Date of gift or inheritance
The gift date is normally when received; the inheritance date is usually the date of death. This is not the valuation/pay-and-file date. Supported dated benefits: 2 October 2024–31 December 2027.

The calculation method

The benefit date selects the applicable group threshold. The new chargeable benefit uses the threshold remaining after aggregated previous taxable benefits; excess is taxed at 33%.

Calculated example result

Capital Acquisitions Tax
€9,900.00
Net Benefit
€440,100.00

How to interpret the result

Revenue thresholds: A €420,000 / B €44,000 / C €22,000 from 7 October 2026; €400,000 / €40,000 / €20,000 from 2 October 2024 through 6 October 2026. Distinguish a tax saving, a tax bill, cash received and money remaining: they are not interchangeable. An estimate does not establish eligibility, filing compliance or when a refund will be paid.

Change one input of gift & inheritance tax at a time and record the result; keep a record of the year, date and assumptions so a change in the result can be explained.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not mix tax years or apply a newly announced measure to an earlier transaction.
  • Avoid counting an allowance, credit, contribution or loss twice.
  • Check exclusions and personal circumstances before relying on the headline result.
