Guide written .
Open the Recipe portions calculatorWhat to prepare
- Collect current bills, receipts, prices or measurements relevant to the question.
- Choose a consistent unit and time period before comparing amounts.
- Separate a one-off cost from a subscription, instalment or repeating expense.
Understand the inputs
The calculation method
Scale factor = desired servings ÷ original servings; multiply the ingredient amount by that factor.
Worked example
Illustrative inputs and their result.
Example inputs
- Original servings
- 4
- Desired servings
- 6
- Original ingredient amount
- 250
Calculated example result
- Scaled Ingredient Amount
- 375
- Scale Factor
- 1.5×
How to interpret the result
A comparison is useful only when its quantities and periods match. The result helps organise a decision; it does not predict future prices, household behaviour or unexpected costs.
Hold the quantity or time horizon steady while changing a price or option. Then check whether delivery fees, restrictions or a changed purchase quantity would reverse the comparison.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not compare different pack sizes without converting to a common quantity.
- Avoid mixing monthly and annual figures without a deliberate conversion.
- Include the actual terms of discounts, subscriptions and payment plans where supported.
Assumptions and sources
Keep the ingredient’s original unit. Cooking time, seasoning and baking chemistry may not scale linearly.
