Ratio and proportional allocation: practical guide

This guide explains how to use the Count.ie ratio and proportional allocation. Split a euro amount between any non-negative ratio weights, including signed refund amounts. Follow the inputs, method and worked example below, then compare your own scenario.

What to prepare

  • Collect current bills, receipts, prices or measurements relevant to the question.
  • Choose a consistent unit and time period before comparing amounts.
  • Separate a one-off cost from a subscription, instalment or repeating expense.

Understand the inputs

The calculation method

Each share = total amount × its ratio weight / sum of all weights. Keep unrounded shares internally.

Worked example

Illustrative inputs and their result.

Example inputs

Amount to allocate (€)
120
Ratio weights separated by colon, comma or space
2:3

Calculated example result

Allocation Summary
Share 1: €48.00; Share 2: €72.00
Allocated Total
€120.00

How to interpret the result

A comparison is useful only when its quantities and periods match. The result helps organise a decision; it does not predict future prices, household behaviour or unexpected costs.

Hold the quantity or time horizon steady while changing a price or option. Then check whether delivery fees, restrictions or a changed purchase quantity would reverse the comparison.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not compare different pack sizes without converting to a common quantity.
  • Avoid mixing monthly and annual figures without a deliberate conversion.
  • Include the actual terms of discounts, subscriptions and payment plans where supported.

Assumptions and sources

Enter at most 100 non-negative weights with a positive sum. Zero weights receive zero; negative totals represent refunds/adjustments. Display rounding can leave a one-cent reconciliation difference.
